The basics
What Are DVA Home Care Services?
DVA home care is the everyday name for the in-home support the Department of Veterans’ Affairs funds so eligible veterans, war widows and widowers can keep living independently. There is no single program. Three sit under that heading, and the right one depends on what you need.

Everyday support
DVA Veterans Home Care Services: What Can You Get?
Veterans’ Home Care is designed for practical help that keeps a home running. Services can include:
- Domestic assistance: cleaning, laundry, bed making, meal preparation,
- Personal care: bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming and eating
- Respite care: a break for carers, in the home, in a residential setting or as emergency short-term relief
- Home and garden maintenance: light bulb changes, gutter and window cleaning, minor repairs and lawn mowing
DVA is clear that Veterans’ Home Care is not built for complex or high-level needs. If your needs are clinical, such as wound care, medication management or palliative support, community nursing is the program designed for that.
For card holders
DVA Gold Card Home Care Services
These services are available to Gold Card holders who live at home and have difficulty with daily activities. A Gold Card is not a blank cheque, though: services still depend on an assessment of your needs and the rules of each program.

Care Services in Home for DVA Gold Card Holders
These can include Veterans' Home Care for everyday tasks, and DVA-funded community nursing where there is an assessed clinical need. Gold Card holders can use community nursing without needing the condition to be service-related.

Gold Card vs White Card Eligibility
White Card holders can use Veterans' Home Care for specific conditions or Non-Liability Health Care. For community nursing, a White Card holder's need has to relate to an accepted DVA condition, and the provider confirms eligibility with DVA.

Getting started
How to Get Started With DVA Home Care
- Check your card. Gold Card holders and some White Card holders can access DVA home care. Your card details are in MyService.
- Pick the right pathway. For everyday help, call the VHC Assessment Agency on 1300 550 450 for a phone assessment of about 30 minutes. For clinical care, ask your GP, hospital doctor or nurse practitioner for a written referral.
- Get your plan VHC approvals come as a Care Plan naming your provider, and nursing starts with a home assessment and care plan.
- Review as things change. VHC needs are reassessed every six months, and you can ask for an earlier review if circumstances change.
If DVA services do not meet all your needs, you may be able to use My Aged Care as well, provided services do not duplicate each other.
What it costs
What Does DVA Home Care Cost?
Cost depends on the program. DVA states that community nursing is no cost to eligible clients, because DVA funds the service through its contracted providers. Veterans’ Home Care may involve a small hourly co-payment for domestic assistance, personal care and home and garden maintenance, while respite care has no co-payment. Co-payment waivers may be available if you cannot afford it.
Figures change each year, so check DVA’s current rates before you rely on them. If anyone asks you to pay for a service you believe DVA should fund, do not pay. Contact DVA.
