The basics

What Are DVA Home Care Services?

DVA home care is the everyday name for the in-home support the Department of Veterans’ Affairs funds so eligible veterans, war widows and widowers can keep living independently. There is no single program. Three sit under that heading, and the right one depends on what you need.

DVA Veterans Home Care Services: What Can You Get?

Veterans’ Home Care is designed for practical help that keeps a home running. Services can include:

DVA is clear that Veterans’ Home Care is not built for complex or high-level needs. If your needs are clinical, such as wound care, medication management or palliative support, community nursing is the program designed for that.

For card holders

DVA Gold Card Home Care Services

These services are available to Gold Card holders who live at home and have difficulty with daily activities. A Gold Card is not a blank cheque, though: services still depend on an assessment of your needs and the rules of each program.

Professional private nursing services providing personalized in-home care

Care Services in Home for DVA Gold Card Holders

These can include Veterans' Home Care for everyday tasks, and DVA-funded community nursing where there is an assessed clinical need. Gold Card holders can use community nursing without needing the condition to be service-related.

A Single Point of Contact

Gold Card vs White Card Eligibility

White Card holders can use Veterans' Home Care for specific conditions or Non-Liability Health Care. For community nursing, a White Card holder's need has to relate to an accepted DVA condition, and the provider confirms eligibility with DVA.

How Oracle Ability Services Supports Clients

Where we fit

How Oracle Ability Services Helps

We are a nursing provider, so we focus on the clinical side of DVA home care services: registered nurses delivering wound care, medication support, chronic condition monitoring, palliative nursing and clinically required personal care at home in Adelaide. Our team documents each visit and shares it with your GP.

We want to be straightforward about the rest. Cleaning, laundry and garden help under Veterans’ Home Care are arranged through the VHC Assessment Agency and delivered by the provider named on your Care Plan, not by us. If your needs are mostly everyday tasks, that is the right door. If they are clinical, talk to us.

What it costs

What Does DVA Home Care Cost?

Cost depends on the program. DVA states that community nursing is no cost to eligible clients, because DVA funds the service through its contracted providers. Veterans’ Home Care may involve a small hourly co-payment for domestic assistance, personal care and home and garden maintenance, while respite care has no co-payment. Co-payment waivers may be available if you cannot afford it.

Figures change each year, so check DVA’s current rates before you rely on them. If anyone asks you to pay for a service you believe DVA should fund, do not pay. Contact DVA.
